New ticketing system makes crossing the Westerschelde easier and cheaper

Travelers between Vlissingen and Breskens can now buy tickets for the ferry service more easily. They can also combine these with advantageous tickets for museums in the region, which can give them discounts of up to 40 percent. Westerschelde Ferry, which transports about 600,000 passengers a year between Zeeuws-Vlaanderen and Walcheren, has entered into a long-term cooperation with Ticketcounter. Since this month, Ticketcounter provides the entire online ticket sales on the route Vlissingen-Breskens and vice versa, as well as the ticket offices in both departure terminals, and the links with and integration of several cooperation partners.

"Where Westerschelde Ferry in the southwest of the Netherlands is in the most literal sense of the word a connecting party between two shores, we are proud to strengthen and broaden that connecting character with our services," explains Maarten Broens, commercial director of Ticketcounter. "By linking systems that previously operated independently of each other, travellers will now buy all their tickets in one place and no longer need to keep several tickets on hand while on the road."

More convenience and lower costs for travellers

Ticketcounter facilitates the complete ticket sales. It has built a new online shop where travelers can purchase all their tickets. This includes the standard tickets for just the crossing from Vlissingen to Breskens and vice versa, as well as new combo deals. This allows passengers to also buy a ticket at an advantageous rate directly for, for example, a round trip on the Zonnetrein or a visit to museums such as the Zeeuws Maritiem MuZEEum Vlissingen and the Visserijmuseum in Breskens.

"Travelers can choose the desired product online directly and the new platform then guides them through the next steps in the purchase process in a more intuitive way, including any additional booking of the entrance tickets for the other destinations," explains Michiel de Wit, Coordinator Services at Westerschelde Ferry. "In addition, they can pay for their tickets in various ways, download them immediately after purchase and also have them sent via email, all to optimize the convenience of use for all our passengers."

Also more options available on location

Ticketcounter has also set up a new cash register system and manages the kiosks in the departure terminals of both docks. Here, passengers can now also make reservations or change purchased tickets to another day within the same fare period, whereas previously this was not possible or only to a limited extent. This means that refunds and vouchers a thing of the past.

Access control is done by scanning the tickets, both digital and physical copies. This is processed through a specially developed API link with the existing ICT infrastructure. The ticket systems of the participating museums are also synchronized, a necessity for making the combined deals possible.
